JMA UK ‘Cool Keys’ and the ‘Doming’ Process

One of the more unique, bespoke items we produce and supply here at JMA UK are ‘Personalised Cool Keys.’ These colourful, high quality domed key blanks offer customers the chance to purchase keys that have more of an impact over the traditional ‘Coined’ key, but also offer them the ability to order in small
quantities with more flexibility in personalising the design.

Doming Equipment

The process for making domed Cool Key labels starts with an image, this needs to be printed on suitable print media.
The labels are then cut out of this media and finished off with a clear, durable, resin dome.
Printing and cutting requires specific but commonly available machinery, while the doming process requires specialised equipment
that you might not have seen before.

Print & Cut Software

All our labels begin with an image. In many cases the image will be an existing company logo. If customers don’t have a logo/image, or need to repeatedly create or edit them, then we can design the artwork for a small fee.
Once we have the image/design, we send a proof of the artwork for the customer to approve.

Once approved, production can go ahead

The first step in the production process requires the ‘job’ to be created in our
dedicated ‘Print & Cut’ software. Once we have produced a sheet of labels
within the software, we can then move on with the printing process.

Doming Machine

Each label is covered in a high quality, clear gloss, polyurethane resin, this comes in two-part cartridges that are inserted into the doming machine, this cartridge keeps the catalyst separate from the resin until you apply it.
It’s the catalyst that starts the curing process that will set the resin on the labels. This gives a hard wearing, clear gloss dome that makes the logo/design really stand out. This also aids identification of the key and provides a better grip in the hand.
Once the sheet of labels has been domed it is then placed into a curing station to harden up.

Cool Keys
Once the sheet of labels has cured, the labels are then ready to be applied to the Cool Key blanks.
Each label is applied carefully by hand ensuring a professional and consistent finish.
The keys are then bagged up and passed to processing to be shipped to the customer.
